Outside of War of the Worlds, H. G. Wells wrote a lot of books - which include The Time Machine, When The Sleeper Wakes, The First Men in the Moon, The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau, etc.
(For a full list, here's the wikipedia page covering his bibliography).
However, if you could pit characters/creations from his other works against the Martians when they invade Earth, are there any in particular that you think could defeat the Martians or at least challenge them in some way?
As an example to start us off, I think George McWhirter Fotheringay from the 1898 short story The Man Who Could Work Miracles is someone who could potentially defeat the Martians if he chose his words right.
For those who are unaware, the story is an early example of "modern fantasy" and shows George - an average man and a sceptic - been unexpectedly gifted/cursed with reality warping power before using it in a variety of ways. These ways included him accidentally transporting a policeman to Hades (before later sending him to San Francisco) and using his powers to help others.
He also accidentally kills everyone when his attempt to stop time instead stops Earth rotating - thus shooting everyone into space - although he does rectify this later. (Still, that's a big "Whoops!" moment).
If George had his powers at the time of the Martian invasion, I do believe he could have stopped them if he chose his words carefully. Heck, depending on how he used his powers and handled the situation, things might have even been dealt with peacefully in a way that could benefit both sides - along with him restoring the damage caused/resurrecting the people killed by the Martians.
However, are there characters/creations from Wells' other works who you think could stop/challenge the Martians?
Curious to see what you guys think.
