The Hermes-Class of Tripods - primarily referred to as 'Scouts' or 'Scout Tripods' - were steam/dieselpunk vehicles created by A.R.E.S.
Standing 15ft tall, running on a diesel-fueled steam and combustion engine and with only one occupant, the purpose of the Hermes-class was to use their superior speed (they were the fastest of all the A.R.E.S Tripods) to search an area and quickly retreat to report back to the more heavily armed forces. The occupant did have access to a medium-sized machine gun armed with 50 caliber bullets, although it would prove to be mostly ineffective against the Martian's fighting machines when they launched their second invasion.
The Tripods were named after Hermes - a God of Greek Mythology who served as the emissary and messenger to the other Gods.
