The Martian War (Covers)

The Martian War - also known by the title The Martian War: A Thrilling Eyewitness Account of the Recent Invasion As Reported by Mr. H.G. Wells - is a 2006 science-fiction novel written by Kevin J. Anderson, who also edited and contributed to the 1996 anthology book, War of the Worlds: Global Dispatches.

Although some versions of the book list Kevin J. Anderson as the author, other versions list the author under Kevin's pseudonym name of Gabriel Mesta. The book is a retelling of H.G. Wells' original novel but in which Wells himself is the protagonist and the events of his book are genuine. Furthermore, the book incorporates characters from H.G. Wells' other stories including Griffin (The Invisible Man), Doctor Moreau (The Island of Doctor Moreau) and the Selenites (The First Men in the Moon).

The book itself shares some similarities with the earlier comic The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume II. These include a team been brought together by the British Government to fight the Martians, Doctor Moreau and Griffin feature in both stories (the book reusing the first name 'Hawley' for Griffin, which was a name chosen for the character by Alan Moore in the comic after Hawley Crippen) and both stories end with the same method been used to defeat the Martians. Furthermore, the novelization for the 2003 film adaption of The League of Extraordinary Gentleman was written by Kevin J. Anderson.
